Turtle Trail A Smash Success!   

The Great Turtle Release Auction and Dinner on November 7th was the finale of Turtle Trail 2008.

The Animal Rehabilitation Keep in Port Aransas is the beneficiary of the proceeds of the evening through Friends of the ARK the non-profit organization. The 200 plus attending at the Civic Center in Port Aransas, were entertained by Jack Trowbridge on the jazz clarinet, and dined by Marco's catering.

Tony Amos, Director of the ARK, began the evening with a welcome and thanks to all the sponsors who gave up their turtle for the auction and praised the artists as well for their excellent work. He then presented to Kris Wimer as a thank you for her work on Turtle Trail 2008 a photograph taken by himself and a gift certificate from Newport Dunes Golf Course.

Tom Crouch from First Community Bank of Texas was the auctioneer of the evening and wowed the crowd with his wit and enthusiasm. Forty one Turtles were sold bringing $43,275 to the ARK in Port Aransas. Kris Wimer gave a short description of each turtle as it came up to bid and Tom Crouch brought the bidding to a frantic pace for each of the works of Turtle Art. The average price of the turtles was slightly higher than the total for Turtle Trail 2006 when 47 works of Turtle Art were sold for $49,280 to benefit the Kemp's Ridley Recovery Project.

The much needed funds raised, will be used at the ARK for refurbishing the large turtle tank and other projects vital to the welfare of the animals in the ARK'S care.

 

In September 2006, Kris Wimer, owner of an art gallery on North Padre Island, created a fund raiser for the endangered Kemp's Ridley Turtle called Turtle Trail 2006. Inspired by the Chicago Cows, Bears in Lake Tahoe and Dolphins in Corpus Christi, painted aluminum turtles were the art objects that were sold for the benefit of the Kemp's Ridley Recovery Program at the Padre Island National Seashore. Forty seven turtles were auctioned the next April and 100% of the proceeds, over $49,000, went to the Recovery Project.

Turtle Trail 2008 will benefit the Port Aransas Animal Rehabilitation Keep, or more commonly known as The ARK. The ARK is well known for their tireless efforts to save injured sea turtles and seabirds, as well as research for their well being. Friends of the ARK is a tax exempt, non-profit corporation, organized exclusively for the prevention of cruelty to animals. It's primary purpose is to raise funds for the rescue of injured, sick and abused wildlife that will be rehabilitated, maintained at The ARK, and released back to their natural wildlife habitat or other licensed facility. Members of the organization are looking forward to working with Kris on this new adventure! Friends of the ARK, through Turtle Trail 2008 will have 40 sculptures for sale on November 8th at the Great Turtle Release Auction, in Port Aransas.

Turtles are sponsored by businesses and individuals. The cast aluminum turtle that is 17" long and 15" wide is a great canvas for an artistic creation. Sponsors paid their artist an agreed price for the artwork, not to be less than $200 and purchased the aluminum turtle from Friends of The ARK for $100. Sponsors are honored and recognized at receptions called "Hatchings," and in the local papers and all available media. Also honored are the artists and their work. (see the Turtle Gallery from 2006 at turtletrail.org ) Businesses and individuals are helping Turtle Trail 2008 by providing a place, beverages and food for a "Hatching." We plan to introduce 8 to 10 works of "Turtle Art" at each event. Turtles will be on display at local business during the year and will be united for the first time the night before the auction for a preview of the art at Port A Gallery, November 7th.
